Walk-and-talk Therapy

Walk-and-talk therapy, also known as outdoor therapy, integrates traditional counselling with the natural environment. By conducting sessions outdoors, this approach uses nature and its elements as metaphors to facilitate the healing process.

Although the Career Center is centrally located in Pretoria, Equestria, it offers a unique setting amidst the African bush. This natural environment, complete with serene pathways and the sounds of chirping birds, provides an ideal backdrop for walk-and-talk therapies. The surrounding bushland isolates the Center from the city’s hustle and bustle, creating a tranquil space for therapeutic work.

  • Reduced Anxiety: Outdoor settings can help alleviate anxiety or claustrophobia that some clients might feel in traditional indoor sessions. The lack of intense eye contact can also make conversations more comfortable.
  • Enhanced Perspective: Walking and changing the environment can help clients think differently about their issues. Physical activities combined with being in nature often lead to new insights and perspectives.
  • Improved Relaxation: Being outdoors can be more relaxing than in an indoor setting, allowing the mind to open up more freely. This can be particularly beneficial for clients who feel “stuck” in their personal growth and professional development journey.
  • Physical and Mental Health: Being outdoors releases endorphins, boosts mood, supports weight loss, lowers blood pressure, enhances immunity, speeds up digestion and improves heart health.
  • Equality and Partnership: Walking side by side fosters a sense of equality and partnership between the client and therapist, promoting a collaborative therapeutic relationship.

While traditional in-practice, phone and online sessions remain valuable, walk-and-talk therapy offers an effective alternative for certain clients. The choice of therapy mode should always prioritise the client’s comfort and preferences, considering the pros and cons to determine the best fit.

Overall, walk-and-talk therapies provide a unique and beneficial approach to overcoming obstacles, enhancing the therapeutic experience through the integration of movement and nature.
