Position Yourself Strategically Through Competitive Analysis

This post is part 5 of 23 in the series Professional Portfolio

Feeling uncertain about how you stack up against others in your career field? You’re not alone. Assessing your position in a competitive workplace can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure how to start. However, understanding the dynamics of your competition is an empowering step toward building a successful career. Here’s how you can approach competitive analysis confidently and effectively.

What Is Competitive Analysis?

A competitive analysis isn’t about eliminating competition. Instead, it’s about understanding workplace needs and your alignment with them. By analysing your competition—other candidates and even technological advancements—you can identify strategies to strengthen your career journey.

Step 1: Identify Key Traits in Demand

Start by listing your industry’s most sought-after qualifications, skills, and traits. Use job postings, professional platforms like LinkedIn, and resources like O*Net Online to create a list. Narrow it down to 3–5 key traits that matter most for your desired roles.

Step 2: Observe and Learn from Others

Examine how successful contenders build their careers and promote themselves. Social media platforms can offer valuable insights. Look at:

  • Skills and qualifications others bring to the table.
  • Campaigns or strategies they use for visibility, such as networking events or online content.
  • The employers and industries they target.

Ask yourself: What are they doing that you’re not? What similarities or differences stand out?

Step 3: Analyse Visibility Campaigns

Dig deeper into how others showcase their expertise. Explore:

  • Keywords and hashtags they use in posts.
  • Topics they frequently discuss or advocate for.
  • Their engagement metrics, such as likes, shares, or professional endorsements.

Understanding these elements can help you refine your visibility strategy.

Step 4: Compare Strengths and Weaknesses

Make a simple list comparing:

  • Your strengths versus their weaknesses.
  • Their strengths versus your weaknesses.

This exercise helps you identify gaps to address and areas where you can stand out.

Step 5: Continuously Improve Your Strategy

Your visibility strategy isn’t static—it evolves. Regularly update it based on new trends and insights. For example, if others are Excelling on a platform you don’t use, explore it. If you have a unique achievement or tool they lack, emphasise it.

Why This Matters

Competitive analysis helps you uncover what works and what doesn’t. It’s also an opportunity to find mentors who inspire you and build connections that propel your career forward. By taking this proactive approach, you can transition from feeling stuck to confidently pursuing your career goals.

Remember, this isn’t about competing for the sake of competition. It’s about learning, growing, and positioning yourself to thrive in your professional life. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your efforts pay off!
